A study on the sensitivity of Drucker–Prager cap model parameters during die compaction of pharmaceutical powders

ثبت نشده
چکیده

In powder die compaction, the characteristics of the end product are dictated by the mechanical properties of the powder being processed. A commonly used constitutive model describing the behavior of pharmaceutical powders during compaction is the modifi ed-Drucker Prager Cap (DPC) model. The experiments used to measure DPC parameters are time consuming and, hence, limit the model’s wide-spread use in industry. In the interest of potentially simplifying the DPC parameter measurement procedures, it is of interest to understand the infl uence each of the model parameters has on the prediction of a tablet’s density fi eld. In this study, a 2 k–p statistical analysis is performed on intratablet density gradients obtained from fi nite element simulation of powder compaction using a range of DPC parameters. The high and low values for the material parameters are selected based on literature reported values for pharmaceutical powders.

Numerical Simulation on Pharmaceutical Powder Compaction

In this paper, we present a modified density-dependent Drucker-Prager Cap (DPC) model with a nonlinear elasticity law developed to describe the compaction behavior of pharmaceutical powders. The model is implemented in ABAQUS with a user subroutine. Using microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) Avicel PH101 as an example, the modified DPC model is calibrated and used for finite element simulations of ...

Analysis of tablet compaction. I. Characterization of mechanical behavior of powder and powder/tooling friction.

In this first of two articles on the modeling of tablet compaction, the experimental inputs related to the constitutive model of the powder and the powder/tooling friction are determined. The continuum-based analysis of tableting makes use of an elasto-plastic model, which incorporates the elements of yield, plastic flow potential, and hardening, to describe the mechanical behavior of microcrys...

Experimental Investigation of Metal Powder Compaction without Using Lubricant

The main objective of this work was to design a novel device for compaction of metal powders so that the green parts could be ejected with applying a negligible force and without the need for any lubricant in either an admixed form or applied to the die wall. For this purpose a 40 mm diameter one-piece die was envisaged which would elastically contracted 0.076 mm before compaction and after com...

Die wall pressure measurement for evaluation of compaction property of pharmaceutical materials.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the compaction property of several pharmaceutical materials by measuring the die wall pressure. The profile of die wall force during tabletting process was measured with the compaction process analyzer (TabAll). Several compaction parameters such as maximum die wall pressure (MDP), residual die wall pressure (RDP) and pressure transmission ratio (PTR) from ...

The effects of ambient temperature on the compaction of pharmaceutical powders

This article presents an experimental study of the effects of raised ambient temperature in dies and punches on the compaction of pharmaceutical powders. The experiments use an instrumented hydraulic press having a temperature-controlled enclosure allowing the ambient temperature of die and punch to be varied from 20 to 57 8C. A pharmaceutical powder was compacted at temperatures in this range ...
